February 2008: December 2007: Sparrow was gelded in June. We'd had several strong nibbles for him as a breeding stallion, but nothing worked out with which we were completely comfortable (let's face it: we really didn't want to let him go!) so we decided to make him our own fantastic gelding. Within the month he went to a Pony Club Upper Level Prep clinic downstate, where he was instantly everyone's favorite. He received the same reaction at the High School Equestrian Team shows, and understandably, many guessed he was a Morgan, some thought he was a Friesian, no one had heard of the Connemara but all came away with a new love for them! Several "cowboy types" said what a great cow pony he'd be - we just may try team penning with him this winter! We made the last minute decision in Sept 2006, when I'd finally promised to either sell or geld Sparrow come the next spring, to put our Welsh mare Bailey and TB mare Sarah, with Sparrow for one last baby each. Sarah had her foal (a filly!) as expected in August, but Bailey waited until late October - apparently she didn't take right away as she usually did - and hers was also a filly. These were the first fillies we'd ever gotten from Sparrow, so were delighted! I was concerned for Bailey's filly being born just as the snow was coming, but we needn't be - she's woolly as a bear and has been just fine. We sold our two-year old gelding Pete in October to a wonderful family just 20 minutes away. We now have at home two long yearling geldings, Pal and Gandhi, and their new little sisters Delilah and Buttercup - all for sale. Athough all, like Pete, are going to be incredibly hard to part with - they are such characters. Our two mares and Killian are still with us but also for sale; we hope to be down to just 2-3 ponies by next fall when Maggie heads off to college. February 2007: After a slow start to the winter (almost no snow in December!) we've since had a very cold and snowy one - ponies are just chillin' (not literally; their thick winter woolies are keeping them plenty toasty) in the fields this time of year. We've wandered around bareback with halters on them a time or two; otherwise they're just eating and relaxing. The human part of the family has, however, been very busy as always during the school year - Katie working nights and taking care of the ponies; Robert running his Packaging Store and coaching the High School wrestling team; Maggie and Derek studying (as much as they HAVE to!) and socializing and wrestling every day (both kids are getting VERY good!). The ponies pretty much see only Katie during the school year, and then mostly just during feeding times. While that doesn't seem to bother them, we humans have come to the bitter realization that the Petersen family is just too busy with the rest of life to be able to devote the time necessary to run a breeding farm properly. Therefore, we have come to the decision to quit the breeding business altogether. All of our ponies are offered for sale now - please see the For Sale page for updates on each pony. Sparrow will be offered
as a stallion through the winter - he is currently being advertised
on several internet sites and will be in the Classifieds section of
the March/April Hunter and Sport Horse magazine. If not sold as a stallion
by May, we will have him gelded, and keep him another couple years at
least, continuing his training (we've wanted to send him to a driving
trainer; something we couldn't do with him as a stallion - just couldn't
find anyone in Michigan able to accept a stallion) and showing him in
Pony Club, open shows and eventing (competing a stallion with a junior
rider was difficult-to-impossible too, due to rules or organizer's liability
concerns). We'd also like to take him foxhunting when the Metamora Hunt
comes up to the Mt. Pleasant/Clare area in the fall. Once Maggie heads
off to college in the fall of '08, we'll either sell him, or perhaps,
keep him as Katie's own personal mount

Both our mares, Sarah the TB and Bailey the Welsh, are also being offered for sale, as are each of our youngsters by Sparrow, and last but not least, Killian the big red QH. We plan to get down to a couple ponies only, which will be much more manageable for us. We'd like to accomplish the selling of our stock by the end of summer '07. Please call and/or email and chat about our ponies! We will only sell them to wonderful loving homes, of course, and will negotiate their prices with the right persons!
November 2006:
Katie and her mom June took a road trip out east to deliver Irish Mist (Boysie, name now changed officially to "Boysenberry") to his new owner in NY, and then take Carmody home to her loving owner Sally Oxnard in NH. We stopped overnight in OH with the Yeager's, Region V's wonderful Chair Mary and her husband Michael and son Ken - had a wonderful evening watching the Michigan/Ohio State football game with them! Talk about some screaming going on, that was a heck of a game! Congrats to OH on that win... :-(
Boysie's new mom Katherine adores him, keeping us regularly updated by email. She tells us she looked at every Connemara purebred and partbred "in the world" via internet and Boysie was the one that met her criteria for a sport horse prospect. She intends to show him in dressage, eventing and hunter/jumper shows. She says he's calm, smart, learning everything easily, and just a great guy to have around the barn.
It was fun to see Sally and her husband Tom at their beautiful home, Paradox Farm, in Exeter NH. Carmody looked surprised but happy to be "back home"! We only got to stay overnight, slipping out at 5 am to start the long drive home, but it was a wonderful visit nonetheless. It was sad to pull away without Carmody though...
October 2006:
We went to the ACPS Region V show at Hoosier Horse Park on October 28 and had a great time.

Sparrow jumping at the ACPS Region V Show
Maggie showed Sparrow in the Combined Test 1 and won it! They also went in the Green Hunter over Fences classes and placed well. Tower Hills Carmody was ridden by Maggie's very new-to-jumping friend Jamie in the Novice/Green Hunter classes and Equitation Jr Rider and got several good ribbons - Carmody toted Jamie around very smoothly and sweetly, as Jamie said. Carmody did not fare so well in the Purebred Mares 6 yrs and Older in-hand class which she won last year; this year she was placed 5th. Still our favorite girl though, whether judged to be first or last!

We enjoyed meeting and stabling/rooming with Sandy Hoffman and her halfbred mare Ritzy, of the Indianapolis area - Ritzy was champion halfbred Connemara of the show!

September 2006:
Maggie has just passed her C2 Pony Club rating on her leased (and much loved!) Connemara mare, Tower Hills Carmody, owned by Sally Oxnard of Paradox Farms in NH. They did a great job and we're very proud of both of them! Carmody will be returning home to Sally in November - we will miss her but realize Sally does too!
We are thrilled to tell everyone that we now are leasing a halfbred gelding bred by Marynell Eyles 17 years ago - Ridgetop Clancy (now officially "Donovan", changed with Marynell's blessing by his current owner). Emma, his owner, is an HA Pony Clubber, currently off to college in New York. She offered to lease Doni to us while she was away at school, which of course we jumped at! Doni is a handsome boy and still very able to do the work a C2-C3 level Pony Clubber does, so will be Maggie's Pony Club mount for at least the next year.
Maggie has also been working
with Sparrow, our stallion, and they have come along very well. We plan to show
him off under saddle this year at the Region 5 show Oct. 28 - in a couple of
dressage and jumping classes, and possibly the trail class too! We will also
bring Carmody for her last hurrah before heading home to Sally. We want her
to have the chance defend her "Best Mare 8 and older" title from last
year, and show her wonderful form over fences again.
